I am doing a link-up with Skinny Meg today for Workout Wednesday. First of all, let me state, I am a wannabe CrossFitter. I use the term "wannabe" because I can't hang with true CrossFitters that workout at a "box" (CrossFit gym) and such. Mainly, the nearest box is 45 minutes away and while I love the camaraderie that you get from working out at a box, I just can't justify spending the money that it is for a membership AND driving 45 minutes just to work out! So, back in 2009 I made do with what I had and my mom and dad, who are both L1 CrossFit trainers, gave me workouts to do with what little equipment I had....my body, some dumbbells, and a few kettlebells. This worked for me tremendously from 2009 until about 2010-2011ish (I lost about 50 lbs) and then I got lazy and stupid and gained all the weight back....then got knocked up! Anyway, I digress. Why I have attempted other workouts with what seems to be not much progress, I don't know. So I am going to get back to the basics and what helped me get fit to begin with. See, I have this trusty notebook that I have put all of my workouts in since August of 2009 when I first started. I am breaking that bad boy out and starting from the beginning. I may modify some of the workouts to incorporate more of the new exercises that I have learned and because I feel like I am much stronger than I was before.
If you are unfamiliar with CrossFit and how it works, CrossFit is "constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity" (Taken from What is CrossFit?). Each exercise is timed and you push yourself to complete the WOD (workout of the day) as quickly as possible with correct technique. So, onto my Wednesday Workout. I did a warm-up of 5 minutes on the treadmill, alternating walking and jogging to get my heart rate up. Then I did 10 push-ups, 20 squats, 30 jumping jacks and stretched some. Here is the workout:
It took me 20:20 to do this. I wanted under 20 but will know to push myself harder the next time I do this exercise. With the warm-up, workout, cool down and some stretching I burned 311 calories! Not too shabby!
I also wanted to share a website that I have really enjoyed using to take the guesswork out of having to come up with a workout. If you are interested in CrossFit but are intimidated by a box, or just don't have the means to workout at one, this website is phenomenal! CrossFit Mamas was started by a stay at home mom of 4 whose husband had been doing CrossFit for few years and she was intrigued by it but didn't have the opportunity to workout outside the home so she has found a way to adapt the workouts from the main CrossFit website to be able to do them at home with the equipment she had. Go check it out if you are interested! Anyway, until next time!
